Kira has a half-sun tattoo on the back of her hand, and interestingly, the mom who adopted Kira’s baby has the other half on her hand. It’s a simple yet meaningful connection they developed during the adoption process. They carry this shared symbol as a daily reminder of the unique bond they formed through the adoption process.
When Kira got pregnant with her second child, she knew that neither she nor the birth father were in a position to parent the unborn child.
Doctor Suggested Heart to Heart Adoptions for Adoption Plans
When she discussed her plans with her doctor, he suggested she contact Heart to Heart Adoptions and talk with them.
Kira was tentative about speaking with an adoption agency because, as she said, “The only way I could place my baby for adoption is if I would continue to have contact,” Kira said. “I had mixed emotions about the situation,” Kira said. “Crazy emotions everywhere. We were living in a crazy situation. I wanted to finish my high school diploma and go to school. Yet, I couldn’t think straight. It was crazy. Then I met everyone,” Kira continued.
“Kathy is the best. I absolutely love her. She went to the doctor’s appointments with me. Everyone made it more relaxing and not as crazy. Talking to everyone kind of helped me put my mind at ease. “
Kira remembers the next few months.
“When I was 32 weeks pregnant, they brought me family profiles. Some of them had kids. Some didn’t, but one family just stood out to me. When the baby’s father got home, I didn’t tell him which one I liked, but he chose the same one. He liked them, too. We did the first phone call with the adoptive family. It was so good. I just fell in love with them from the beginning. Knowing the family and knowing about them made me feel so much more comfortable going through everything.”
Before meeting in person, the family connected on the OurHeartsConnect app., where they could send messages and photos back and forth. It was on this app that they first discussed getting a tattoo.
“I love the idea of a half sun; you get half, and I get the other half. Or maybe, like each of us, get a butterfly wing,” one of the posts reads.
The night before coming to meet Kira as she was going into labor, the adoptive family received this message on the OurHeartsConnect app.
"Be safe on your travels, and we can't wait for Tuesday! Only a couple more days left!"
“TODAY IS THE DAY!!!! Kira, words cannot even tell you how insanely grateful and excited I am to get to meet you in person tonight!!! I can hardly wait!!!”
The adoptive mother responded with,
They had been sending messages and speaking on the phone for several weeks. Their tattoos were planned. Now, they and the respective fathers would meet for dinner at Moki’s Hawaiian Grill.
After the birth, the two couples spent precious hours “passing around the baby and bonding.” Kira said.
Kira’s bond with Payton, the adoptive mother, transcended the adoption itself. Payton’s thoughtful gesture of sending an apron when Kira achieved her high school diploma and started cosmetology school was a testament to the enduring connection.
