Shun Toxicity

  • You can’t have too many people love a child.

  • You don’t include toxic people in your child’s life.

At Heart to Heart Adoptions we strongly believe in both of the above statements.

Toxicity comes in all forms, but the only thing anyone needs to be toxic is a mouth.

Now we’ve all had a toxic mouth day. At our house we called it a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day day, (as in the book “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” by Judith Viorst—and if you haven’t read that book can you really BE a parent??)

Anyway, if you are having a horrible, very bad day, and your mouth is toxic, that does not make you a toxic person. It doesn’t make your grandfather, aunt, teacher, coach, or birth family a toxic individual either. Having a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day makes you human.

HOWEVER—kids are intuitive, and they recognize the different between a bad day and an enduring attitude.

On the website “Hey Sigmund” there is a great article, “Toxic People Affect Kids Too: Know the Signs and How to Explore a Little Deeper,” by Karen Young. It’s a good read

And you might also want to read “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.” It is also a good read.
