You Have Rights as a Birth Mother
Recognize Your Rights
If you are considering adoption in Idaho, it’s important to know your rights. Laws are in place to protect you and your baby. You always have the choice to decide what is best.
When you call Heart to Heart, Michelle or Wendy will answer and connect you with a case manager — Jodi, Ashlyn, Stacey, Haley, or Kathy — who will explain everything in simple, clear terms.
Hannah from Nampa said, “I was nervous about signing papers. My case manager Kathy explained everything step by step. I felt in control and safe.”
When You Can Sign Adoption Papers
In Idaho, you can sign adoption papers after your baby is born and you’ve had time to rest and think.
Your case manager will make sure:
- You fully understand your rights
- You feel comfortable with your decision
- You have legal support if you need it
You are never rushed or pressured to sign anything.
Consent and Contact
You get to choose whether or not you want contact with your baby after adoption:
- Open adoption allows letters, photos, phone calls, or visits
- Semi-open adoption can include occasional updates
- Closed adoption has no contact
Your case manager will guide you in setting up a plan that works for you and your baby.
You Don’t Need a Lawyer Alone
While we always work with adoption attorneys to make sure everything is legal, your case manager stays with you every step.
They answer questions, explain papers in easy language, and make sure you feel safe and confident.
