What is a Florida adoption agency and what does it do?
A Florida adoption agency is a licensed organization that manages the legal, emotional, and practical needs of placing a baby for adoption. The main job of an agency is to be a helpful connection between a birth mother and an adoptive family. One of the most important responsibilities of the adoption agency is to make certain the adoptive family is the right one for you and to make sure they are prepared to love your child.
Florida adoption agencies are licensed and regulated by the Florida Department of Children and Families under Florida Statute Chapter 63. Heart to Heart Adoptions holds Florida License #100033775 and operates as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization.
What are a birth mother's legal rights in Florida adoption?
Florida law protects any woman considering adoption for her child. This protection is provided before, during and after you give birth. You have the right to choose the adoptive family for your baby. You have the right to independent legal counsel at no cost before signing any paperwork. You have the right to know exactly what you are signing and what it means.
Consent to adoption in Florida cannot be signed until at least 48 hours after your baby is born — or until you are notified in writing that you are fit for hospital discharge, whichever comes first. Once consent is signed, it is legally binding and cannot be revoked except in cases of fraud or duress. Before that moment, you can change your mind at any point, for any reason.
