What Happens After Adoption Placement?
Placement starts daily family life, but the legal process is not finished.
During the post-placement period, a social worker visits your family, documents how everyone is doing and prepares the reports required before finalization.
What Are Post-Placement Visits?
Post-placement visits are supervisory meetings after the child is placed with you. They give the social worker a chance to see how the child and family are adjusting and to document required information.
Why Are Post-Placement Visits Required?
They are part of the legal and professional process before finalization. The number and timing of visits can depend on state requirements and the circumstances of the adoption.
What Happens During a Visit?
Expect conversation about the baby's health, routines, attachment, medical care, family adjustment and any concerns you have.
This is not the time to pretend everything is effortless. If something is hard, say so.
What If We Are Struggling?
Tell your social worker and Heart to Heart Adoptions. Asking for support is more useful than trying to make a post-placement report look perfect.
The goal is to help the family and child adjust safely.
How Much Do Post-Placement Visits Cost?
For Utah families using Heart to Heart Adoptions, the current fee is $150 per post-placement visit.
What Should We Do About Health Insurance?
Notify your insurance company promptly after placement. Coverage timing can vary. Heart to Heart Adoptions’s current orientation notes that some plans may cover from birth while others begin coverage after placement paperwork. Confirm the effective date directly with your insurer and tell your adoption team when coverage begins.
What Happens With the Birth Family?
Continue the contact you agreed to and communicate if circumstances change. Our Hearts Connect can provide a private space for messages, photos and videos.
What Should We Do Before Finalization?
Complete required visits and reports, stay in contact with your attorney and keep your adoption records organized.

Required post-placement visits and reports must be completed, and the legal case must be ready for the court.

Do We Need an Attorney?
Yes, adoption finalization is a legal process. Your adoption attorney prepares the required filings and guides you through the court process.
What Happens at the Finalization Hearing?

What Should We Know About the Federal Adoption Tax Credit?
The federal Adoption Tax Credit may help eligible families with qualified adoption expenses. The IRS lists adoption fees, attorney fees, court costs, travel and certain other expenses directly related to a legal adoption among potentially qualified expenses.
Tax rules change. Check the IRS guidance for the tax year that applies to your expenses rather than relying on an old guide figure or another family's return.
What Records Should We Keep?
Keep fee statements, invoices, receipts, attorney bills, court costs, travel records and other adoption-related financial documents.
Consider a qualified tax professional if you need help determining what applies to your return.
What Happens After Finalization?
The court case may be complete, but adoption remains part of your family's life. Your child's questions and your relationship with the birth family will continue to develop.

The legal effect of these agreements varies by jurisdiction, so legal questions belong with the attorney handling the adoption.
Why Is It Important to Be Realistic About Contact?
Promises made before placement matter. Do not agree to a level of contact you already suspect you will not maintain.
It is better to have an honest conversation before placement than to create expectations that later become a source of hurt.
