What support is available for birth mothers in New York City?

How does the adoption process work here?
It starts with one call or text. After that conversation, you are not locked into anything. But you have someone that will listen to your situation and help you decide what is best for you. A caseworker helps you build your plan at your own pace.
If you sign consent outside of court, New York law gives you a window afterward to change your mind. You get your own free lawyer. New York also lets you set up a contact plan with the adoptive family that a judge can approve and enforce. This means there is real protection for your open adoption

Can I stay connected with my child after adoption in New York City?
Yes!!
Yes. New York is one of the few states where a Post-Adoption Contact Agreement can be approved by a judge and then it is considered enforceable by law. You get to choose how much contact. You might want yearly photos, yearly calls or in-person visits. You may want weekly emails and pictures. You get to decide what is the best for you and that decision can change as your life changes.

Heart to Heart Adoptions is happy to serve women all five boroughs equally. Women in Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, Staten Island, and Manhattan all get the same full support. If you don’t want to travel and if you aren’t comfortable will a case manager coming to your home we have remote counseling by phone or video means you never have to travel to an office. Eventually, however, we always want to have in-person meetings so you know how we are there for support.

What about privacy in New York City?
NYC can feel like a small town hiding inside a huge city. Some communities are tight-knit, and privacy worries are real. Adoption through Heart to Heart Adoptions is confidential. We don’t share your information outside the legal process without your okay. You don’t have to tell anyone. In most instances you will want support from your family, but some situation suggest that you need to have more privacy. You don’t have to tell your family, your boss, or anyone else in the community.

A NEW YORK CITY STORY
Shaundra* slept in a shelter when it was cold, but she also had a favorite part in the Bronx where her and several of her friends stayed. She was receiving help from an organization called the Jericho Project. Over the course of working with Shaundra we came to love some of the staff at the organization. We were so impressed with how they helped.
Originally, Shaundra called us from one of the offices at the Gun Hill housing site. She wanted to be taken seriously, and she wanted us to know that she was working hard to get a job and manage a substance use disorder.
We worked with her and her case manager to get her medical care and counseling that would stay with her even after she gave birth.
Without a computer of her own, she used a computer at the project center and looked at files from potential adoptive families. She wanted to speak with two different families on the phone. We facilitated those calls, and one family and her clicked. They kept in contact for several weeks before the baby was born. The family came to the hospital and Shaundra still calls them. She has visited her baby twice and has found a job

What if I don't have stable housing?
Tell your caseworker right away. They can connect you to emergency housing resources alongside Heart to Heart’s own support, regardless of where you are in your pregnancy.
What if I don't have family support?
That’s all right. Many women who call us are doing this without family support. Your caseworker and counselor become part of your support system through the process.
Can I place my baby for adoption from a New York City hospital?
Yes. Heart to Heart has worked with women at hospitals across all five boroughs. Your caseworker can coordinate with hospital staff ahead of time if that’s helpful.
Can I choose an adoptive family before delivery?
Yes, if you’d like to. Many birth mothers choose and even meet their family before their due date, though you can also decide after birth if that feels right for you.

Is adoption really free for birth mothers in New York City?
Yes. Heart to Heart pays for everything. This includes legal help, counseling, case management, medical coordination. Living-cost help also starts at month 8 of pregnancy, under New York law.
What if I'm not sure about adoption yet?
Support which for sure includes counseling, starts with your first call, before you’ve decided anything. The month-8 rule under NY law only affects money for living costs. Counseling and emotional support start right away.
